Yeah that’s not cool. I have seen a series of adds for the Xbox 360 game Table Tennis that does autoplay but the audio volume only goes up when your mouse is over the add. I can deal with this or the on demand version.

That’s really bad. I agree with you that the person who owns the computer should not find it possessed.
But you probably weren’t the only person exposed to that page, and if people do sue for hot coffee, then I could imagine some situations which would trigger self-correcting mechanisms….

yep, the user should see/hear the add/video only if he wants to.

sorry josh, but i don’t agree that youtube autoplay is okay cuz of the “all video website”, its just because of the user request normally occours BEFORE video page is displayed.
if a given user has clicked on a particular video, its because that user wants to see the video… so nothing is wrong about the autoplay, cuz its the ‘video on demmand’
its all about permission.. when a user choose to see a video, nothing is wrong with autoplay

That is SOOO wrong. What’s the acronym for that? NOA? Not Office Appropriate. Pity the poor 55 year old balding guy sitting in his cube in the middle of the floor with speakers instead of headphones. The audio should be muted with the option to unmute it. I think some of the MS Office ads are like that.

Sounds like this issue hit a soft spot with you Josh.
JK. We knew it was just a matter of time before something like this started happening. Good way to drive traffic away from your site.

We faced another bigger problem when after our intro we have to load the video and it is of 4 mb so without getting a confirmation from user site is choking the bandwidth. So in a solution we have placed a simple single frame swf which loads into container and then on play we start loading the movie.

In response to Sam Robis comment, I find that really annoying when the volume goes up only on the ad. But have you noticed it’s the same with TV?

I think we can all agree that hearing that when you visit a site is not really what anyone would expect or want. I don’t really like the auto play audio on any site including espn. I inevitably leave the computer at times only to have some audio start playing on the computer while I am halfway accross the house wondering what that noise is.

I know what your saying Josh. Any kind of auto play music or ads when you open a site is very annoying.

Maaaaaan… I had to refrain my urge to laugh out loud!!! (2:50 AM, my family is sleeping!!!)
But you’re absolutely right. Now that I’m more and more into flash video, I’ll keep this in mind.
